“Embracing a new paradigm in policing through transformational leadership.”
The Jamaica Constabulary Force has taken on the mantle to achieve the Vision 2030 mission and it is through transformational leadership that we will be properly equipped to acquire this target. Transformational leadership is geared towards enhancing morale and performance of our serving members. As leaders we must be role models who commit selfless acts; we must challenge our juniors to take greater responsibility for their work and actions; we must identify their strengths and weaknesses and utilize these strengths by aligning them with the objectives of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
In order to embrace this new paradigm, there must exist a strong level of professionalism between management and its juniors. Therefore, there needs to be open channels of respectful communication. Also individual contributions must be acknowledged and accolades given in necessary circumstance. Our style of leadership must embody the values which we embrace as an organization, of which our juniors would seek to emulate. This should be so compelling as to cause citizens to align their views with ours and help us bolster against the challenges with which we are encumbered. As we progress in transforming the Jamaica Constabulary Force and uniting our forces with that of the Island Special Constabulary force, I urge you to provide our members with a sense of purpose, garnering enthusiastic employees to foster a committed workforce.
At the leadership level, we are adamant in enforcing the strategic priorities of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and have mainly focused on a reduction in the crime rate, especially murders which have plagued our nation. Since 2010, we have seen a steady decrease in murders and we must, without apology strive towards its maintenance. I am confident that we are restoring the public’s confidence in this organization.
We recently had a colossal victory against “organized crime” and criminal gang activities, with the arrest, charge, trial and conviction of a reputable individual. Our focus has been diverted to individuals who use legal professions as a front to commit illegal activities, activities frowned upon by the law abiding citizens of this nation. A plethora of research and factual data has shown that extortion, MONEY laundering, auto theft and gun related offences have significantly contributed to the crime rate. Therefore, it has become mandatory for our members to intensify our probe and investigations, to weed out the degenerates that infest our nation.
Notwithstanding our charge to regenerate hope within our society, some of our member’s activities have attributed to the lackluster view some individuals have of the organization. Therefore, in achieving a new paradigm, it is incumbent upon the Anti-corruption branch to purge the organization of undisciplined and corrupt members and restore some level of professionalism for the enforcement of law and order.
This year’s theme, identifies that the Police Federation has embraced our vision of organizational transformation by reiterating that the organization requires transformational leadership. It is with welcomed anticipation that I look towards forging into the future.
